.5 Signs You’re Not On The Right Path (And What To Do About It) Article by Erin Janus|

What does it mean to be on the right path?

To be on the right path is to be living in alignment with your dreams and desires,

and developing and using your skills, talents and passion to do so.

When you’re on the right path, you will feel connected to your true state of being which is pure joy, love and excitement— even if you are going through challenges.

It can be easy to detour from the path that is right for us in this rather mechanical, robotic society. Here are 6 signs you’re not on the right path, and what to do about it:

1) You get jealous of people who are living their dream and succeedingWhen we are aligned with our purpose, we will naturally celebrate the fact that others are living their dream, and their success will excite and inspire us. When you find yourself getting jealous of another’s success or happiness they find while pursuing their dreams and goals, that’s a sure sign that you are not aligned with doing so for yourself. What to do: Let the success of others inspire and ignite you. Take your power back and realize that we are all just people, and if someone else is pursuing their dreams and succeeding, you can too. Every successful person had to start out somewhere (and many of the most successful people started out with nothing!) Take it one step at a time.

2) You are easily affected by the opinions of othersWhen we know in our gut that we are doing something great for our ourselves, the opinion of others doesn’t shake that. However, when we are not on the right path for ourselves, or not spending enough time nurturing our skills and passions, we will not have the secure, confident space within ourselves that comes with doing that. And consequently, it will be much easier for opposition and judgement from others to affect us or get under our skin. What to do: Realize that regardless of their intentions, not your parents, friends or peers know what path is best for you (although they often desperately believe they do). Only you can truly know what life path is best for you. So start taking small, practical steps to spend more time doing what feels right. Spend more time following your heart and nurturing your skills and passions, and less time worrying about what others think. (Note that the ones who doubt you and bring you down are often people who are NOT living their dreams or working towards reaching their highest potential!)

3) It’s easy for you to feel depressed and hopelessWhen we are not on the right path, it’s easy to feel like this guy. But you know what? It’s a blessing in disguise that depression, emptiness and hopelessness is rampant when we are not living in alignment with our purpose. Otherwise we would be happy wasting our potential away for our entire lives! What to do: Don’t try to ignore or mask up your sadness or emptiness with “happy thoughts”, binge eating or substance abuse. Why are you feeling bummed out? Are you being all you can be? Are you working towards being the best version of yourself? Are you going outside of your comfort zone and doing what you love? Are you nurturing your skills, talents and passions? Are you reaching your potential? Why not? Take small steps to work towards these things and that rainy cloud above your head might just turn into a rainbow. Try it.

4) You spend more time focusing on other people than your own ideasWhen we are out of touch with our goals, dreams, and passions, we tend to spend more time focusing on other people and what’s going on in their lives, while our own creative ideas and aspirations are neglected, and thus die. It’s common for people to obsess over the financial and social status of others within their circle of friends, family or even with celebrities or figures on social media— and even negatively compare themselves as not being ‘as good’ as others. However, this is psychologically destructive and will drain anyone of mental energy which could be spent on their own lives and creative endeavors. What to do: While it’s perfectly healthy to get inspiration from others who are living their dream and reaching their potential, spend less time focusing on them as if they are ‘ahead of you’ and more time harnessing the inspiration you get from them. Take action for your own life, career and success— one step at a time. Let people be where they’re at, and walk confidently in the direction of your dreams.

5) You continuously make excuses as to why you can’tIf there’s one thing people are good at: it’s making excuses. (I’m a master at it myself! And what do I get out of it? Self-loathing, lack of productivity, and emptiness!) What’s that one thing you’ve wanted to do or accomplish for a while? What’s that word that helps to stop you every time? It’s the word can’t. We need to focus on possibility, potential and solutions— not excuses. And the word can’t is the most popular excuse-builder for not achieving greatness. What to do: When it comes to your dreams, desires and goals, get rid of the word can’t and replace the content of your thoughts and the words you speak with all that you CAN do.

“The word “can’t” makes strong people weak, blinds people who can see, saddens happy people, turns brave people into cowards, robs a genius of their brilliance, causes rich people to think poorly, and limits the achievements of that great person living inside us all.” —Robert T. Kiyosaki

We make it so much more difficult than it needs to be. Whether it’s “I’m not good enough” or “it’s too late,” we come up with excuses to shut out our inner desires and resist what our heart wants. Everyone, even the most successful people have felt doubt and had times where they did not nurture their skills, talents and passions. But the difference between those who live a fulfilling life and live their dreams and those who don’t, are those who listen to their heart and those who don’t.
